Founded in 1946, UNC Charlotte is one of the great success stories in American higher education. Today, Charlotte is the third-largest university in North Carolina, with more than 31,000 enrolled students, and we are a leading economic driver for our fast-growing region.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s an unstoppable momentum at Charlotte. Our gains in academics, research, student success, athletics and community engagement are not just steps forward; they are leaps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driven by rising student and research success metrics, Charlotte has reached new heights in the national rankings. Since 2020, Charlotte is one of the top 10 fastest-rising universities in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. For 2025, Charlotte ranks No. 81 among U.S. public universities and as the most innovative public university in North Carolina, at No. 45 nationally.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of particular significance is our University\u2019s rising research enterprise. Since the launch of our 10-year strategic plan in 2021, our aim to establish ourselves as a globally renowned top-tier research institution has steadily progressed. We reached a major milestone in February 2025 when we were officially designated as a Carnegie R1 institution.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
