In November, the Chronicle of Higher Education projected Charlotte will achieve Carnegie R1 status in early 2025, reflecting the University&#8217;s trajectory toward becoming one of this nation\u2019s preeminent public research universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023-24, Charlotte \u2013 which has seen its research expenditures rise 272% during the past decade \u2013&nbsp;continued to grow its research enterprise.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, the Division of Research announced the largest expansion of research centers in University history <a href=\"https:\/\/inside.charlotte.edu\/news-features\/2023-10-18\/division-research-launches-faculty-research-grant-program-14-centers-funded\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">through the Ignite initiative<\/a>, providing funding for 12 pilot research centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New partnerships are powering Charlotte\u2019s research growth. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>North Tryon Tech Hub: <\/strong>A visionary project that envisions a technology and research hub in Uptown Charlotte with UNC Charlotte as the academic anchor.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NCInnovation:<\/strong> Charlotte is one of four regional hubs for this statewide initiative that aims to support applied research to help university innovations advance to commercialization. NCInnovation <a href=\"https:\/\/inside.charlotte.edu\/2024\/05\/21\/ncinnovation-awards-pilot-grants-to-two-charlotte-researchers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">awarded pilot grants<\/a> in May to two Charlotte researchers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Carolinas Innovation Center for Optics and Metrology Consortium: <\/strong>Charlotte is leading an initiative, funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/inside.charlotte.edu\/news-features\/2023-10-25\/charlotte-awarded-tech-strategy-development-grant-us-economic-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Economic Development Administration Tech Hubs program<\/a>, to create a global manufacturing hub for optics and metrology in the Charlotte region.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/air.charlotte.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Charlotte Aviation Innovation and Research Institute<\/a>, or Charlotte AIR, the only partnership of its kind
