Brian Arreola<\/strong><\/a> | Dr. Brian Arreola\u2019s research includes voice and opera. During the pandemic he composed the opera Zavala Zavala<\/em>, with a libretto by Anna Deeny Morales. Zavala Zavala<\/em> tells the true story of one of the first victims of the first Trump administration\u2019s family separation policy. The Washington, DC, based opera company In Series<\/em> premiered Zavala Zavala<\/em> on their 2021-2022 season, which included performances at the Kennedy Center\u2019s Terrace Theater. The opera was remounted in June 2024 by the GALA Hispanic Theatre in Washington, D.C. Read more about the opera and its recent production here<\/a>. As a tenor, Dr. Arreola has recently performed opera roles with In Series<\/em> and Japan Society of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Will Campbell<\/strong><\/a> | Dr. Will Campbell\u2019s research includes jazz saxophone, jazz education, jazz composition and arranging. In 2024, Dr. Campbell served as a guest conductor for the South Carolina All-State Jazz Ensemble in Newberry, South Carolina. In 2023, he was the invited guest conductor for the Texas All-State Jazz Ensemble II at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Clinic\/Convention, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, in San Antonio, Texas, held February 8-11. The Texas All-State bands are regarded as the most advanced bands of their type in the country.  Dr. Campbell\u2019s arrangement of \u201cBeyond Thursday,\u201d an original composition by world-renowned trumpet artist Scott Wendholt, has been performed at three universities in recent years. He was asked to compose the sight reading etudes for all instruments for the 2025 Oklahoma All-State Jazz Ensemble auditions. Campbell continues to perform with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra and has served as a guest artist at University of Texas at Arlington (2023) and DePauw University (2022, 2023, 2024). <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mira Frisch<\/strong><\/a> | Dr. Mira Frisch\u2019s research includes cello performance and string pedagogy. In recent years, she has performed at venues such as the Japan Society of Minnesota, GALA Hispanic Theater in Washington D.C., Davidson College, the Charlotte SHOUT Festival, and with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Frisch has performed and recorded both popular music and Classical chamber music for WDAV Classical Public Radio. She and her ensemble, the Charlotte Strings Collective, have performed throughout Charlotte. The ensemble recently collaborated on the community-engaged project \u201cBrooklyn to Browne\u2019s Ferry,\u201d which chronicles the story of Grace A.M.E. Zion Church, its migration, and its effort to redefine itself in a new place and time. A multi-art blend of sights, sounds, and movement, the project preserves an element of Charlotte\u2019s Black history through video, live music, and dance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

James Grymes<\/strong><\/a> | Dr. James Grymes\u2019s research includes musicology, 20th-century music, music of the Holocaust, and music history pedagogy. Dr. Grymes is the author of Violins of Hope: Violins of the Holocaust\u2014Instruments of Hope and Liberation in Mankind\u2019s Darkest Hour<\/em> (Harper Perennial), a book that composer John Williams describes as \u201ca work of research and scholarship that forms one of the most moving chronicles in the history of Western music.\u201d  His current book project, Partisan Song: A Holocaust Story of Resilience, Resistance, and Revenge<\/em>, is about Moshe \u201cUncle Misha\u201d Gildenman, a Jewish civil engineer and musician who led one of the most successful partisan units in the guerilla war to liberate Ukraine from Nazi occupation during World War II.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Kristi Hardman<\/strong><\/a> | Dr. Kristi Hardman\u2019s research includes timbre, form, meter, text\/music relations, issues of transcription, ethics of analysis, and music theory pedagogy. Most recently she presented an invited talk entitled “Comparing Two Experiences of Beat in Tanya Tagaq’s ‘Ilunikavi'” at a symposium in honor of Dr. John Roeder held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on June 24, 2023. Her paper focused on devising a method for analyzing beat from two perspectives, Hardman\u2019s and Tagaq\u2019s, using ictus points in video recordings, and the cross-cultural understanding that can come from such an analysis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Hunter Kopczynski<\/strong><\/a> | Dr. Kopczynski\u2019s research areas include music conducting, wind band repertoire, and instrumental ensemble culture. Most recently, he served as a guest conductor for the US Army Field Band, the Old Dominion University Wind Ensemble, the Carolina Trombone Project, and several regional honor bands. His article entitled, \u201cConducting Communication\u201d was published in the Winter 2023 North Carolina Music Educator<\/em>. Recent presentations include \u201cLess Can Be More: Artistic Innovation During Changing Times,\u201d presented at the College Music Society Mid-Atlantic Conference in March 2023, and \u201cWhy Are We Playing This? Developing classroom Culture Through Curriculum, Creativity, and Community,\u201d a virtual presentation in April 2022 at the University of Utah. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jason Mitchell<\/strong><\/a> | Dr. Jason Mitchell\u2019s research includes Caribbean popular music and culture; the music of Aruba, Bonaire, and Cura\u00e7ao; economic agency and music; music and cultural heritage; and music and digital media. Most recently he completed his Ph.D. dissertation titled “Sounding Out the ABCs: Music and Economic Agency in Aruba, Bonaire, and Cura\u00e7ao” and presented a paper titled “The ABCs of Social Networking: The Role of Digital Media in the Musical Culture of Aruba, Bonaire, and Cura\u00e7ao” at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology, Southeast\/Caribbean Chapter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Evelyn K. Orman<\/strong><\/a> | Dr. Orman\u2019s research includes the use of virtual reality to enhance music teaching and learning, the effects of music on heart rate variability, the content of YouTubeTM<\/sup><\/em> as it relates to music teaching and learning, and Titleology. Her manuscript, co-authored with Ana Lucia Frega, entitled, “Analysis of Titles and Authors from 50 Years of ISME Research Commission Manuscripts, 1968-2018” was recently published in the International Journal of Music Education <\/em>and her article entitled, \u201cWindows and Mirrors: Characteristics of Clarinet Performers in YouTubeTM <\/sup>Videos” (currently in press) which examined the diversity of clarinet performers in YouTubeTM<\/sup> videos was presented at the International Society of Music Education (ISME) Research Commission and World Conference.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dylan Savage<\/strong><\/a> | Dr. Dylan Savage\u2019s research includes establishing the value of comprehensive universal skill learning in the music lesson and their application to life. He is author of the book The Transposed Musician: Teaching Universal Skills to Improve Performance and Benefit Life<\/em>, GIA Publications. It is the first book to present a comprehensive and systematic method for teaching universal skills within the context of the music lesson. He is currently exploring the “consciousness of self” that can develop from the comprehensive application of universal skills in music performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Joseph Skillen<\/strong><\/a> | Dr. Skillen’s research includes music performance (tuba), applied music pedagogy, entrepreneurship, and curricular design. Most recently she collaborated with Trio Village to present a lecture recital tour throughout the southeastern United States featuring all music by living women composers and the group  received a completed commission, The Spiral, from composer Shawn Okpebholo, funded by an Illinois Artist Grant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
