The Rowe Arts Building houses three primary exhibition spaces: the Rowe Lower Gallery, Upper Gallery, and Side Gallery. Each year, exhibitions feature the work of regional, national, and international visiting artists, as well as work by students and faculty from the Department of Art & Art History. The Rowe Arts Side Gallery is usually a student-centered exhibition venue that provides an opportunity for current UNC Charlotte studio art students to participate in a variety of exhibitions. The gallery is designed as a flexible space where students can explore unconventional methods of display and installation, as well as juried or curated exhibitions hosted by student organizations, classes, and studio areas of study. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Art & Art History presents the 58th annual Juried Student Exhibition, on view in Rowe Galleries January 23- March 20, with a reception and awards ceremony on March 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year’s jurors are Eric Mullis, Seirin Nagano, and Amy Herman.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Walls Have Ears: Laura Lucas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Utilizing the idiom, \u201cthe walls have ears,\u201d this exhibition is an exploration of the intersections of figures and space, focusing on the transformative power that ordinary spaces and moments can possess. A visual documentation journeying through fear and the unknown\u2014 an alchemical experience.  An amalgam of our internal emotional space and the external space we inhabit, depicting the gradual transformations that we go through navigating our everyday life. This exhibition acts as a window into these vulnerable, sometimes uncomfortable moments where the space and the people inhabiting it – though seemingly isolated – are intrinsically connected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laura Lucas graduated from UNC Charlotte in 2023 with a BFA in Art, painting concentration, and a Minor in Art History. Her work is influenced by cinema, particularly the quieter, atmospheric moments in film that go unnoticed when one focuses on following the key plot points and overall narrative arc. In The Walls Have Ears<\/em>, her first solo exhibition, she emphasizes space, leaving the viewers to find their own narratives in the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Roderick MacKillop Memorial Alumni Art Exhibition<\/strong>: Rod MacKillop was a beloved painting professor from 1973 until his retirement in 2003. In 1988, he initiated a juried art exhibition of alumni work at the University, a practice that has continued biannually in the galleries of Rowe Arts building. In June 2017, the MacKillop family established three endowments<\/a> at UNC Charlotte in his memory to find student scholarships and the recurring alumni exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
