As a member of Movement Migration, a professional dance company led by his colleague, Associate Professor Kim Jones, Balcos has performed locally and in Italy and New York, including at the well-known Danspace Project in Manhattan \u2013 sometimes dancing as many as four works in a program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Balcos credits his longevity as a performer in part to his study of somatic disciplines \u2013 holistic movement practices like contact improvisation, which he began learning in college, and Alexander Technique. More recently, his research into integrated kinesthetic awareness has led to the study of Body-Mind Centering\u00ae (BMC). Founded by Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, BMC uses movement, touch, and vocalization to deepen awareness of the whole body and its complex systems. Balcos is pursuing his certification as a Somatic Movement Educator in BMC, completing intensive courses&nbsp;at Espirit en Mouvement&nbsp;in Montreal, Canada. He has also&nbsp;been certified as a Registered Somatic Dance Educator (RSDE) by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ismeta.org\/\">International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association<\/a>&nbsp;(ISMETA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBody-Mind Centering is helping me as a professional dancer to be holistic and healthy in an integrated way,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His research has a profound impact in the studio, too. \u201cE. E. Balcos is quietly revolutionizing the Department of Dance curriculum,\u201d says Chair Ann Dils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery time I take a course, my teaching gets better. There are certain holistic ways of looking at the body that I use in every class I teach. That kind of body awareness is really helpful for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His approach to teaching begins with creating \u201ca climate of trust and inclusivity,\u201d in which his students learn to \u201cconnect within their bodies and connect outside their bodies.\u201d In today\u2019s world, Balcos says, when students are often immersed in a digital or virtual environment, that human connection is especially crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is becoming recognized internationally for his work in this field and is on the review board for the international&nbsp;<em>Journal of Dance and Somatic Practices<\/em>, Coventry University, UK. In 2018, Balcos taught a workshop at the 33rd Annual North American Body-Mind Centering Association Conference at Smith College in Northampton, MA and performed at the 6th Annual Somatic Dance Conference at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY.&nbsp; In 2019, he gave presentations at the North Carolina Dance Educators Organization conference, the American College Dance Association conference, and attended the NDEO\/ISMETA Somatic Movement and Dance Education Conference in NYC.&nbsp; The biggest highlights of 2019 include presentations at the C-DaRe 2019 Dance and Somatic Practices Conference in Coventry, United Kingdom; the 34th Annual Body-Mind Centering Conference in Santa Barbara, California; and the 2019 Body IQ Festival in Berlin, Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March 2021, Balcos presents a workshop and participates in two panels for the ISMETA conference,&nbsp;<em>Engaging Embodiment 2021: Somatic Applications for Health, Education &amp; Social Justice<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rejuvenating Performance and Teaching Through Holistic Movement Research Associate Professor of Dance At an age when most professional dancers have given up the stage, Associate Professor of Dance E.E.&nbsp;Balcos can maintain a performance schedule that dancers half his age might envy.
