The Department of Theatre will present four productions in the 2018-19 academic year in a season that matches two European comedies from centuries past with two dramas by contemporary American female playwrights.<\/p>\n
Archipelago<\/em> by Caridad Svich Two UNC Charlotte theatre professors, CarlosAlexis Cruz and Kaja Dunn, take the stage for this beautiful play by UNC Charlotte theatre alum Caridad Svich. Svich, who received the theatre department\u2019s 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award, has written more than 40 full-length plays and received a 2012 OBIE Award for Lifetime Achievement in the theatre. Guest director Monica Ndounou is Associate Professor of Theater and Sony Music Fellow (2017-2018) at Dartmouth College and the author of Acting Your Color: The CRAFT, Power and Paradox of Acting for Black Americans 1950s to the present<\/em>.<\/p>\n Twelfth Night<\/em> by William Shakespeare Robinson Distinguished Professor of Theatre Andrew Hartley directs this production of Shakespeare\u2019s gender-bending comedy about a love triangle shaped by disguise, deception, and yellow stockings.<\/p>\n Servant of Two Masters<\/em> by Carlo Goldoni Rooted in Italian commedia dell\u2018arte, this 18th<\/sup>-century comedy by Carlo Goldoni was the inspiration for the 2012 Tony-Award-winning One Man, Two Guvnors<\/em> starring James Corden. The characters\u2019 antics and acrobatics will be directed by physical theatre professor Carlos Cruz.<\/p>\n Blues for an Alabama Sky<\/em> by Pearl Cleage The Harlem Renaissance is the setting for Pearl Cleage\u2019s 1995 play, in which the lives of four New Yorkers are interrupted by a new transplant from rural Alabama. Though they live at the dawn of the Great Depression, the characters in Blues for an Alabama Sky<\/em> confront challenges that are not unlike our own.
