{"id":34267,"date":"2017-04-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-12T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/large-kinetic-clock-sculpture-installed-in-robinson-hall\/"},"modified":"2024-06-03T09:52:39","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T13:52:39","slug":"large-kinetic-clock-sculpture-installed-in-robinson-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/news\/large-kinetic-clock-sculpture-installed-robinson-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"Large Kinetic Clock Sculpture Installed in Robinson Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>James Borden\u2019s <em>Time and Space<\/em>: A Hickory Museum of Art Loan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The lobby of UNC Charlotte\u2019s Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts is the new home for a remarkable 20-foot wooden clock sculpture, <em>Time and Space<\/em>, installed by the artist James Borden on April 19 and 20. <em>Time and Space <\/em>is on long-term loan to the College of Arts + Architecture from the <a href=\"http:\/\/hickoryart.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hickory Museum of Art. <\/a>Its installation in Robinson Hall is made possible by a gift to the College from Wilton and Catherine Connor, who originally purchased the sculpture.<\/p>\n<p>The Connors purchased <em>Time and Space<\/em> at the American Craft Council exhibit in Charlotte in 1998 for the lobby of the new World Headquarters for Wilton Connor Packaging (WCP). They sold WCP to Weyerhaeuser in 2001. Weyerhaeuser was later purchased by International Paper, which donated the clock to the Hickory Museum of Art.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;International Paper was pleased to donate the clock to the Hickory Museum of Art, and we are happy that it has an appropriate site to be displayed for the enjoyment of the public,&#8221; said Pete Miller, general Manager of International Paper Charlotte.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"James Borden with Time and Space sculpture\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/MG_6963.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/600;\">James Borden lives and works in Sibley, Iowa, where he designs and builds wooden kinetic sculptures called \u201cTimeshapes.\u201d His \u201cTimeshapes\u201d are mechanical weight-driven or spring-driven clocks. \u201cI strive to create a balanced, lively form, to highlight shapes inherent in the wood itself, and to make the whole piece come alive with graceful, whimsical motion,\u201d Borden says in an artist\u2019s statement.
