The reconstruction was the result of an 18-month process and was funded in part by a Faculty Research Grant, a gift from the Wells Fargo Foundation, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.<\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tracer performed by dancers\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/0978-9904small.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/400;\">Tracer<\/em> (pictured, photo by Jeff Cravotta) is one of seven works by Taylor for which no complete record of the choreography exists. One of 13 dances that Taylor created with the great American artist Robert Rauschenberg, it premiered in Paris in April 1962 and was last performed in 1964. During an extensive research process that culminated in a residency at UNC Charlotte, Jones worked with dancers of the Taylor 2 Dance Company, who premiered the reconstructed <em>Tracer<\/em> in Robinson Hall on September 30, 2016. A <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/28\/arts\/dance\/how-do-you-reconstruct-lost-choreography-paul-taylor-tracer.html?rref=collection\/sectioncollection\/dance&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=dance&amp;region=stream&amp;module=stream_unit&amp;version=latest&amp;contentPlacement=1&amp;pgtype=sectionfront&amp;_r=0\">New York Times article on August 26<\/a><\/em> described her research process.<\/p>\n<p>The Taylor 2 Dance Company performed <em>Tracer<\/em> in New York City at the 92<sup>nd<\/sup> Street Y on December 16 and 17. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/18\/arts\/dance\/paul-taylor-robert-rauschenberg-review.html?_r=2\">The <em>Times<\/em> review<\/a> praised Jones\u2019s reconstruction work for its \u201cinstinct and imagination as well as research.\u201d Paul Taylor has accepted the reconstructed <em>Tracer<\/em> into the Taylor company repertory.<\/p>\n<p>UNC Charlotte students have also learned <em>Tracer<\/em> and will perform the work throughout the spring semester in local high schools and on the Spring Dance Concert, April 1-4.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A lost dance by modern dance master Paul Taylor, reconstructed by Associate Professor of Dance Kim Jones, was recently reviewed in The New York Times by chief dance critic Alastair Macaulay.
