The Department of Music will celebrate the music of women composers on April 21 with Set No Limits<\/em><\/strong>, a free concert at UNC Charlotte Center City at 7:30 pm. Developed by Assistant Professor of Clarinet Jessica Lindsey, the program presents music by eight composers, performed by Lindsey and guest artists Christian Bohnenstengel, piano, and Christy Banks, clarinet. Funded in part by a Chancellor\u2019s Diversity Grant, the concert is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n Of the eight composers on the program, seven are living, with one 19th<\/sup>-century composer, Alice Mary Smith. Two of the composers will be present at the concert, Marga Richter and Sheila Silver, the second woman to ever win the Rome Prize.<\/p>\n Although the works share similar instrumentation (clarinet and piano), they vary widely in style and inspiration, from Silvers\u2019 soothing and darkly colored \u201cLullaby\u201d to Richter\u2019s restless and dissonant \u201cSonata\u201d to Smith\u2019s Mozartean \u201cSonata in A.\u201d<\/p>\n Earlier in the day on April 21, at 2:00 pm in Rowe Recital Hall, the Department will host a panel discussion with the composers and musicians, moderated by Associate Professor of Philosophy Robin James.
