Robinson Distinguished Professor of Shakespeare Andrew Hartley and Dr. Lynne Conner, chair of the Department of Theatre, have worked closely with choreographers Peter Chu and Stephanie Martinez to explore Shakespeare through contemporary dance.<\/p>\n<p>Using Shakespeare\u2019s <em>Hamlet<\/em> as a foundation \u2013 and in particular its most famous soliloquy \u2013 Hartley and Chu examine mental illness in \u201cLet Be.\u201d Conner and Martinez consider gender roles and relationships by presenting couples from four different plays: <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em>, <em>Macbeth, A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>, and <em>The Taming of the Shrew<\/em>. The title of their work, \u201cUnsex Me Here,\u201d comes from Lady Macbeth\u2019s plea to remove any \u201cfeminine\u201d sensibilities that might prevent her from \u201cmasculine\u201d ruthless ambition and strength.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/entertainment\/arts-culture\/article224639045.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more in this article in the <em>Charlotte Observer<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Innovative Works will be performed at the Charlotte Ballet\u2019s Center for Dance, January 25 through February 16.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two new dance works on the Charlotte Ballet\u2019s upcoming Innovative Works: Shakespeare Reinvented program have been created in partnership with the Department of Theatre.
