{"id":35935,"date":"2019-05-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-06T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/work-of-idrl-recognized-in-the-architects-newspaper\/"},"modified":"2024-06-03T10:00:44","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T14:00:44","slug":"work-of-idrl-recognized-in-the-architects-newspaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/news\/2019-05-06\/work-idrl-recognized-architects-newspaper\/","title":{"rendered":"Work of IDRL Recognized in The Architects Newspaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p>A long-term multidisciplinary research project by the Integrated Design Research Lab (IDRL), under the direction of Associate Professor of Architecture Kyoung-Hee Kim, was featured in <em>The Architects Newspaper<\/em> on May 3. <a href=\"https:\/\/archpaper.com\/2019\/05\/unc-charlotte-integrated-design-research-lab-algae-facadesplus\/#gallery-0-slide-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The article<\/a> describes the microalgae fa\u00e7ade system that Dr. Kim and the IDRL team have been investigating since 2012, most recently in prototyping funded with a <a href=\"https:\/\/inside.uncc.edu\/news-features\/2017-11-01\/architecture-professor-receives-upjohn-grant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 AIA Upjohn Research Initiative Grant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bringing together faculty and students from the School of Architecture with members of the engineering, biology, and construction management programs, the large IDRL team carried out a feasibility study focused on the speculative retrofitting of the Denny Building on the UNC Charlotte campus. In 2014, they constructed a prototype of four-by-eight-foot glass and metal-frame panels (pictured above). In this system, bands of microalgae, growing inside the panels, filter carbon dioxide out of the air as it circulates through the system; as it fills with sequestered carbon, the algae can be collected and converted into biofuel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"microalgae facade rendering\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Microalgae.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/491;\"><\/p>\n<p>More recently, Dr. Kim and her colleagues have refined their concept via <a href=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Microalgae-Fabrication-Process.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smaller scale prototypes created in the IDRL<\/a>. They are applying for a National Science Foundation Innovation Corps (I-Corps) grant so that they can carry out a discovery process for different building sectors. \u201cWe are aiming for initial commercialization of practical and cost-effective applications in both new-build and retrofit buildings, while developing a series of prototypes with different end-use application in accordance with industry standards and building regulations,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Housed in the School of Architecture in the Storrs building, the <a href=\"https:\/\/idrl.uncc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Integrated Design Research Lab<\/a> is an interdisciplinary research platform for integrating architecture design and building technologies. Dr. Kim became IDRL director in 2018.
