The NSF STTR program funds research and development to help transform scientific discovery into products and services with commercial potential and\/or societal benefit.<\/p>\n<p>The $225,000 grant will support a new stage in the development of a microalgae fa\u00e7ade system that Dr. Kim and her team, which includes IDRL Research Fellow Chengde Wu and Matthew Parrow, an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, have been studying since 2012. It is the latest of several research grants the project has received, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/inside.uncc.edu\/news-features\/2017-11-01\/architecture-professor-receives-upjohn-grant\">2017 AIA Upjohn Research Initiative Grant<\/a> ($30,000) and a <a href=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/news\/2019-06-04\/two-idrl-projects-receive-nsf-i-corp-grants\">2019 NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) grant<\/a> ($50,000). Collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/research.uncc.edu\/departments\/ventureprise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ventureprise<\/a>, the innovation and entrepreneurship center in Research and Economic Development, has provided the team with resources and expertise as the project has developed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"diagram of microalgae window\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/NSF_Image_algae2.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 350px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 350\/339;\">In this phase of the research, the team will develop a microalgae window for retrofitting low-performing commercial windows on office buildings constructed before 1980. The windows will incorporate a network of screens filled with microalgae, which serve multiple beneficial functions, including carbon sequestration, solar shading, and thermal insulation. Not only will that result in lower energy costs and cleaner indoor air, but the algae can also be collected and converted into biofuel, producing a renewable energy source.<\/p>\n<p>Research has shown that indoor air quality affects productivity and cognition in office workers. A <a href=\"https:\/\/green.harvard.edu\/tools-resources\/research-highlight\/impact-green-buildings-cognitive-function\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2015 study<\/a> found, for example, that performance scores in nine areas of cognitive function were significantly higher for workers in \u201cgreen\u201d office environments than for workers in conventional office environments.<\/p>\n<p>Housed in the College of Arts + Architecture in the Storrs building, the <a href=\"https:\/\/idrl.uncc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Integrated Design Research Lab<\/a> is an interdisciplinary research platform for integrating architecture design and building technologies. Dr. Kim became IDRL director in 2018.
