In the presentation, \u201cFabrication Futures: Pushing the Envelope in the Southeast,\u201d Dr. Kim will speak about developments in the microalgae fa\u00e7ade research that she and her interdisciplinary team, which includes a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, have been studying since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Carried out through the <a href=\"https:\/\/idrl.uncc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Integrated Design Research Lab (IDRL)<\/a>, Dr. Kim\u2019s research investigates the use of microalgae in high-performance building envelope design. Incorporated into windows, screens filled with microalgae provide carbon sequestration, solar shading, and thermal insulation. The algae can also be collected and converted into biofuel, producing a renewable energy source.<\/p>\n<p><iframe frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Nc7NrUfiBQI\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In May, the IDRL team <a href=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/news\/2020-05-28\/microalgae-fa%C3%A7ade-project-wins-nsf-grant\">received a Small Business Technology Transfer Phase I (STTR) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) <\/a>to support the commercial development of the research. It was the latest of several research grants the project has received, including a 2017 AIA Upjohn Research Initiative Grant ($30,000) and a 2019 NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) grant ($50,000).<\/p>\n<p>Since the summer, the team has carried out critical testing of structural integrity and water leakage and has begun the process of full-scale mock-ups to conduct field measurements of energy performance and indoor air quality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/facadesplus.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fa\u00e7ade + conferences<\/a> focus on the design and performance on the next generation of fa\u00e7ades, bringing together researchers and industry professionals.
