{"id":37501,"date":"2021-01-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-22T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/course-by-architecture-professor-wins-national-prize\/"},"modified":"2024-06-03T10:15:36","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T14:15:36","slug":"course-by-architecture-professor-wins-national-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/news\/2021-01-22\/course-architecture-professor-wins-national-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Course by Architecture Professor Wins National Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p>Assistant Professor of Architecture Liz McCormick has received a 2021 Buell Center Course Development Prize in Architecture, Climate Change, and Society for her class &#8220;High-Performance, Low-Tech.&#8221; The prize, which is awarded by Columbia University\u2019s Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), recognizes coursework that focuses on the intersections of climate, infrastructure, and architecture.<\/p>\n<p>The five winning courses, chosen by a distinguished jury, will receive a cash prize and support for their implementation at their host institutions. The course proposals will also be presented at the ACSA 109th Annual Meeting, to be held virtually, March 24-26, 2021. Faculty from the University of Houston, Florida A &amp; M University, University of Hawai\u2018i at M\u0101noa, and Woodbury University in California were also winners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese courses seek the kind of realism that redefines problems and leaves room for imagination,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acsa-arch.org\/2021\/01\/21\/winners-announced-for-the-2021-course-development-prize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the ACSA and Buell Center said in a press release<\/a>. \u201cOverall, faculty and students will use methods and themes that innovate within their institutional settings to address the intertwined causes and effects of climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCormick\u2019s course, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acsa-arch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2021-CoursePrize-HighPerformanceLowTech.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High-Performance, Low-Tech<\/a>,&#8221; will build upon a seminar that she is teaching this semester in the School of Architecture \u2013 \u201cBuild, Test, Iterate, Repeat\u201d \u2013 which currently has undergraduate, masters, and PhD students enrolled. Projected to run in the Spring 2022 semester, the interdisciplinary seminar will be open to students from across the campus, and McCormick hopes especially to draw engineering and environmental science students, in addition to architecture students.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Indian Jali screen\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Jali-screen.png\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 232px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 232\/160;\">The course \u201cwill explore the vernacular strategies associated with rapidly urbanizing regions in order to translate their character, physical qualities, and thermal capabilities to a commercial scale, reducing the reliance on energy-intensive mechanical systems while developing a new, climate and culture-specific urban identity,\u201d McCormick described in the proposal. Students will research traditional and modern vernacular architecture types in regions identified by the United Nations as \u201crapidly developing\u201d \u2013 for example, the Indian Jali screen, which helps to lower the air temperature and improve thermal comfort in naturally ventilated buildings (pictured right).
