Funded with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), <em>New Masks Now: Artists Innovating Masquerade in Contemporary West Africa<\/em> will be a nationally and internationally traveling exhibition and will feature an accompanying scholarly publication and series of public engagement programs.<\/p>\n<p>Homann joins a large curatorial planning team led by Amanda M. Maples, curator of African art at the NCMA, which includes Jordan A. Fenton of Miami University Ohio, Kevin D. Dumouchelle of the NMAfA, and Herv\u00e9 Youmbi, a collaborating researcher and a leading contemporary artist in Cameroon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMasquerade has long stood as the iconic African performance genre, and yet the artists who create masquerades are often unacknowledged and underrepresented in exhibitions and publications,\u201d the NCMA said in <a href=\"https:\/\/ncartmuseum.org\/images\/uploads\/blog\/FINAL_Mask_Grant_Press_Release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a statement announcing the NEH grant<\/a>. \u201c<em>New Masks Now<\/em> will showcase the artworks and voices of individual creators and offer a fresh take on the vitality of masquerade arts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition will focus on four masquerade artists: Chief Ekpenyong Bassey Nsa (Nigeria), David Sanou (Burkina Faso), Sheku \u201cGoldenfinger\u201d Fofanah (Sierra Leone), and Herv\u00e9 Youmbi (Cameroon). It is scheduled to open at the NCMA in 2024 and will subsequently travel to the NMAfA and the New Orleans Museum of Art, with the possibility of exhibition at other North American museums.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"masquerade in Africa\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Sogossira-Sanon-PM-2009-WEB_Homann.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/448;\">Homann\u2019s research focuses on West African masquerade practices from the late 19th century to the present.
