The interdisciplinary project, led by Dr. Kyoung Hee Kim, associate professor of architecture and director of the IDRL, is in its ninth year of development and has received grant funding from the American Institute of Architects and the National Science Foundation, most recently through an NSF <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Small Business Technology Transfer Phase I (STTR) grant<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the era of climate action, a fa\u00e7ade that reduces energy consumption and actively sequesters carbon can hardly come sooner,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectmagazine.com\/awards\/r-d-awards\/award-toward-carbon-neutralityhigh-performance-biochromic-window_o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote Murrye Bernard in the July\/August issue of <em>Architect<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em> &#8220;A microalgae window system by the Integrated Design Research Lab at the University of North Carolina Charlotte checks both boxes while cultivating a renewable energy source and supporting occupant wellness through improved indoor air quality and reduced glare and solar heat gain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"microalgae window\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Mike-Basher_microalgae-window_WEB.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/535;\">The project&#8217;s R+D team includes Dr. Matt Parrow, director of the Microbial Ecophysiology and Evolution Laboratory in the Department of Biological Sciences at UNC Charlotte; former IDRL research fellow Chengde Wu; Arturo Lujan, Ok-Kyun Im, Milad Rogha, Alexander Cabral, and Robby Sachs of the School of Architecture; and Garrett Herbst, AIA, of Little Diversified Architectural Counseling. This summer the team installed the window system in Storrs Hall on the UNC Charlotte campus and tested six different algae strains, each with different properties.<\/p>\n<p><em>Architect<\/em> chose six winners from 62 entries for its 15th annual R+D Awards.
