Founded in 2015 and now in its fourth edition, the 2021 CAB takes place September 17-December 18 and is organized around the theme of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org\/current_edition\/the_available_city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Available City<\/a><\/em>. Participating designers have worked with local community groups to develop ideas for vacant urban spaces throughout Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Cooke\u2019s installation is a pavilion in the North Lawndale area of Chicago designed and built in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ymenchicago.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Young Men\u2019s Educational Network<\/a> (YMEN), a non-profit organization that serves young Black men in the North Lawndale community, preparing them for leadership \u201cby helping them grow in their faith and character, develop a love for learning, and use their talents to serve the community and strengthen our families.\u201d The installation, constructed from parts of a 40-foot shipping container, sits in a vacant lot on South Pulaski Road. Cooke was assisted in the design process by Heather Warren, a design associate at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sekoucooke.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sekou cooke studio<\/a>, and recent architecture alumna Makenzie Elam. The pavilion was built by a team that included community members and youth organized by YMEN.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sekou Cooke at installation with team\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Sekou_Chicago.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1600\/1020;\"><br \/> <em>Sekou Cooke, center, talking to a group on the site of &#8220;Grids + Griots.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cooke has named the work \u201cGrids + Griots,\u201d a concept explored in his recent book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/us\/hiphop-architecture-9781350116146\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hip-Hop Architecture<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn important tool for engaging younger residents is the transfer of oral traditions and histories from generation to generation,\u201d Cooke writes in the project description. \u201cThe griot\u2013\u2013a storyteller, entertainer, and occasional healer\u2013\u2013is an important character in many West African cultures. \u201cIn the book <em>Hip-Hop Architecture, <\/em>the chapter &#8216;Grids + Griots\u2019 contrasts the image and attitude of the griot with that of Modernist and Postmodernist architectural practice.
