Comprised of more than 50 articles and essays from nearly 60 contributors, the book is a groundbreaking body of research that establishes the central role of the audience to the performing arts and the many ways to consider, investigate, support, and evaluate that role.<\/p>\n<p>The book is organized into four sections, with each of the editors \u2013 Matthew Reason, Katya Johanson, and Ben Walmsley, in addition to Conner \u2013 overseeing a section. As lead editor for <em>Part One: Histories, Theories and Questions of Social Justice<\/em>, Conner wrote the introduction, interviewed the author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellendissanayake.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ellen Dissanayake<\/a>, and wrote the third chapter, \u201cDisrupting the Audience as Monolith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll seven chapters included in the \u2018Histories, Theories and Questions of Social Justice\u2019 section are focused, in one way or another, on the need for greater awareness over matters of power, equity, and inclusion in audience research practices,\u201d Conner wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rowx\/2022\/05\/20\/too-little-heterogeneity-histories-theories-and-questions-of-social-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a recent blog post<\/a>. \u201cThe authors in Part One argue for the unsettling of the field\u2019s established patterns, habits, and assumptions that are, upon reflection, informed by systemic racism, sexism, and ableism (overt and subtle) by positing important questions about our methodological and narrative assumptions as audience researchers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With contributions from a collection of international writers and researchers in disciplines as diverse as psychology, sociology, neuroscience, the performing arts, and arts marketing, the other sections examine audience policies, politics, and practices; the varied methods and methodologies of audience research; and an eclectic list of elements of the audience\/performance dynamic \u2013 topics like laughter, memory, and the effects of Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>For arts practitioners and administrators, the <em>Routledge Companion<\/em> \u201cshows the richness and potential of broadening our thinking about audiences whose purpose is primarily to provide money and support for art-making to understanding \u2013 really understanding \u2013 the experience audiences have,\u201d wrote Hannah Grannemann in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rowx\/2022\/05\/20\/audiencing-introducing-the-routledge-companion-to-audiences-and-performing-arts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an introduction to the book in her blog, <em>Row X<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Conner is a theater and dance historian, cultural policy theorist, and playwright. Her publications include the books <em>Audience Engagement and the Role of Arts Talk in the Digital Era<\/em> (Palgrave Macmillan 2013); <em>Pittsburgh in Stages: Two Hundred Years of Theater <\/em>(University of Pittsburgh Press 2007); <em>In the Garden of Live Flowers<\/em>, co-authored with Attilio Favorini (Dramatic Publishing Company 2003); <em>Spreading the Gospel of the Modern Dance: Newspaper Dance Criticism in the United States, 1850-1935<\/em> (University of Pittsburgh Press 1997); and the monograph <em>Project Brief: The Heinz Endowments\u2019 Arts Experience Initiative<\/em> (The Heinz Endowments 2008).
