As energy-saving responses to climate change become imperative, architects and engineers continue to develop new approaches to building design and construction that reduce negative impacts on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Double-skin facades developed in Europe several decades ago as a way to both save energy and augment access to natural light and ventilation. The design incorporates two \u201cskins\u201d or exterior surfaces \u2013 both glass \u2013 with space in between for air circulation and, if desired, blinds or some sort of shading device. The air gap in between the two fa\u00e7ades acts as insulation. The technology has been widely used in Europe, but sparingly in the United States, although it is gaining popularity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Cambridge-Library.jpg\" alt=\"picture if Cambridge Public Library\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1501px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1501\/916;\" \/><em>Cambridge Public Library, an example of double-skin facade construction in Cambridge, Massachusetts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To achieve sustainability goals, it is important for high-performance buildings to have tools to evaluate a design\u2019s performance once it is in operation. <em>High-Performance Double Skin Fa\u00e7ade Buildings: Climatic-Based Exploration<\/em> gives architects a practical guide to analyze and asses the real-life performance of double skin fa\u00e7ade buildings in different climatic contexts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I wanted to do was to look at the actual performance and compare it to the energy models and see how they perform in different conditions,\u201d Azarbayjani said. \u201cThere was no actual evidence of how they were doing, so I looked at all different kinds of climatic situations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Monas-book.jpg\" alt=\"cover of book\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/424;\" \/>In her book, Azarbayjani first describes different types of double-skin fa\u00e7ade construction and explains how the technology works. She then presents case studies of eight buildings in North America (seven in the U.S. and one in Canada), interviewing the buildings\u2019 architects, engineers, owners, and users to create a comprehensive picture of the effectiveness of double-skin fa\u00e7ade technology in across different climate conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn cold climates, they perform quite well \u2013 as well as predicted,\u201d she said. \u201cThe issue is that they don\u2019t perform as well in the hot, humid conditions in the summer months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her book also looks ahead to \u201cgive some clues about the next generations of fa\u00e7ades,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was also trying to focus on the fa\u00e7ades of the future.
