In 2010 she sang 40 consecutive performances as Clara in the 75th Anniversary National Tour of <em>Porgy and Bess <\/em>(pictured above). \u201cHer lovely lyric soprano spun \u2018Summertime\u2019 winningly,\u201d wrote <em>South Florida Classical Review<\/em>. \u201cShe gave unusual stature to Clara as a figure of tragic grandeur.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DuBose has performed with opera companies in the U.S. and Europe, including Lyric Opera of Chicago, Michigan Opera Theatre, Opera Memphis, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Utah Festival Opera, and Royal Danish Opera. Last year she made her Opera Carolina debut, <a href=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/news\/2022-01-17\/voice-professor-joins-opera-carolina-cast\">performing the role of Elvira in Mozart\u2019s <em>Don Giovanni<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DuBose\u2019s performing interests include musical theatre and contemporary and hybrid works, and with Assistant Professor of Theatre Laura Waringer she co directs the College of Arts + Architecture\u2019s Musical Theatre Certificate program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/05\/Blured_Lines_cover_Sequina.jpg\" alt=\"cover of album Blurred Lines\"style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/400;float: left; margin-right: 15px;\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\">Her research explores the intersections of contemporary classical and commercial music, musical theater, and music of the African diaspora, and she recently released her debut album, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sequinadubose.com\/blurred-lines.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Blurred Lines: 21st Century Hybrid Vocal Literature<\/em><\/a> on the Albany Records label. <em>Blurred Lines <\/em>presents the works of seven 21<sup>st<\/sup>-century composers who blur the lines between opera, classical art song, and other musical genres. Recorded in Charlotte at Sharon Presbyterian Church, the 15-track album features DuBose performing with pianist Gregory Thompson, with contributions by UNC Charlotte music faculty Mira Frisch (cello) and Jessica Lindsey (clarinet), alumni Daniel Ferreira (percussion) and Rob Linton (bass), and guests Kari Giles (violin) and David Hughey (voice).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DuBose\u2019s vast and varied musical tastes were cultivated from childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was raised in Detroit, Michigan in a multi-generational household where I could on any given week hear the rock music of my metalhead uncle and the Sunday morning hymns and spirituals of my Southern grandmother wafting through the household,\u201d she said. \u201cThis music was intermingled with the Motown sound of my parents, and my own interests in pop and R &amp; B music of the 90s and early 2000s. It wasn\u2019t until college that I learned about opera and how to apply classical singing techniques.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During her doctoral program at the University of Maryland, DuBose formalized her fascination with the musical hybridization that is becoming increasingly prevalent in contemporary music. Her dissertation investigates the impact of genre fusion and improvisation in 21st-century operas on vocal pedagogy and performance practice. It was through her research that she developed relationships with several of the composers represented in <em>Blurred Lines<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the support of a Faculty Research Grant, DuBose began to commission new hybrid works from composers.
