Ravin School of Architecture, examines the role of the built environment in both the spread and the mitigation of infectious disease historically, currently, and in the future. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/papress.com\/products\/the-pandemic-effect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Pandemic Effect: Ninety Experts on Immunizing the Built Environment<\/a><\/em>, published this month by Princeton Architectural Press, brings together architects, urban designers, materials scientists, and health officials to consider how the design of buildings, spaces, and cities can promote public health and protect us from future pandemics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysical context plays a significant role in transmitting infectious disease\u2014the cause of approximately one-third of annual deaths worldwide,\u201d Brownell writes in the book\u2019s introduction. \u201cYet, there is insufficient awareness about the influences of architecture, infrastructure, and the constructed landscape in spreading illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dearth of knowledge became glaringly obvious in the spring of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. As the crisis grew, Brownell began to address pandemic-related topics in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectmagazine.com\/author\/blaine-brownell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMind and Matter\u201d article series in <em>Architect<\/em> magazine<\/a>. Those articles and related lectures and presentations became the foundation for the book, which he hopes will \u201ccatalyze the creation and sharing\u201d of information and understanding. \u201cIn the future, architecture has the potential to be a cure\u2014not a cause\u2014of communicable illness,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n<p>The book organizes numerous brief essays into five thematic sections: <em>Histories<\/em>, <em>Inside\/Outside<\/em>, <em>Interventions<\/em>, <em>New Strategies<\/em>, and <em>The Public Realm<\/em>. While the 90 contributing experts come from all over the world, 10 are faculty at UNC Charlotte. Mona Azarbayjani, Rachel Dickey, Jefferson Ellinger, Kyoung Hee Kim, Liz McCormick, Noushin Radnia, and Catty Dan Zhang are in the School of Architecture. Cynthia Gibas is in the College of Computing and Informatics; Hamed Tabkhi and Mariya Munir are in the Lee College of Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>The timeliness \u2013 and usefulness \u2013 of Brownell\u2019s book landed it on <em>Fast Company<\/em>\u2019s list of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90824377\/7-design-books-to-look-forward-to-in-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7 design books to look forward to in 2023<\/a>,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/9781648961649\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an early review in <em>Publisher\u2019s Weekly<\/em><\/a> called it an \u201cilluminating collection\u201d that is \u201csmart and creative.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new book by Blaine Brownell, director of the David R.
