Professor of Architectural History Lee Gray joined CBS Sunday Morning News on May 21 for a feature story on elevators. Gray is an international expert on elevators and escalators. Interviewed at the Biltmore House in Asheville, where the 19th-century elevator still has a staff operator, he explained how elevators changed the world. Gray is the author of From Ascending Rooms to Express Elevators: A History of the Passenger Elevator in the 19th Century <\/em>and is currently working on a history of escalators. Since 2003 he has written monthly articles on the history of vertical transportation for Elevator World<\/em> magazine. He has been featured numerous times in print and on air as a noted scholar of vertical transportation, including in the Wall Street Journal<\/em>, the New York Times<\/em>, PBS Nova<\/em>, NPR’s Here and Now<\/em>, and the History Channel.
