It has been more than five years since Burch, associate professor of scenic design, taught a puppetry class in the Department of Theatre. In February 2018, students helped create puppets for a production of <em>The Long Christmas Ride Home<\/em>, by Paula Vogel (pictured below).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"production of The Long Christmas Ride Home\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/05\/Christmas-rIDE.png\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1818px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1818\/1220;\"><\/p>\n<p> Since that production, Burch, who studied puppetry in graduate school at Northwestern University, participated in the 2020 National Puppetry Conference hosted by the Eugene O&#8217;Neill Theatre Center and led by Artistic Director Pam Arciero, a principal puppeteer with Sesame Street. Meanwhile, he has continued to design outstanding sets for a wide range of productions, from Children\u2019s Theatre of Charlotte\u2019s <em>Allie Kazan and the Magic Mansion <\/em>(below) to the opera <em>Don Giovanni <\/em>for La Musical Lirica.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"scene from Allie Kazan\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/05\/2223-Allie-Kazan-carousel-Marvelini-point.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1800\/900;\"><\/p>\n<p> This fall, Burch revived his puppetry class and embarked on a quirky reimagining of a cult classic, the German Expressionist film <em>The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari<\/em>. Originally created in 1920, the silent film is often credited as the first horror film.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"scene from the 1920 film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/05\/Caligari-film-still.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1800\/1200;\"><\/p>\n<p> Burch began designing the puppets for his<em> Caligari Project <\/em>over the summer, turning to the project in earnest once the fall semester began. Meeting for three hours each Friday, the 12 students in the puppetry class <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D4AAn71ZLjs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learned how to give wooden puppets lifelike movements and melodramatic emotions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D4AAn71ZLjs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"rehearsal with puppets\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/05\/Caligari-2.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1800\/1200;\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p> While most of the students in the puppetry class are theatre majors, two \u2013 Jacob Scannell and Diego Milner \u2013 are majoring in architecture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my first time interacting with the theatre department and it has been very insightful,\u201d said Milner (pictured below, left). \u201cI enjoy learning about all of the behind-the-scenes work that makes a play work. I find the interdepartment workings between lighting, voice acting, directing, and costume\/shop fabrication very interesting and inspiring as I learn about how productions move from imagination to reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"composite image of students Diego Milner and Jacob Scannell operating puppets\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/05\/Diego-and-Jacob.png\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1600\/1200;\"><\/p>\n<p> \u201cFrom an architectural point of view the class is very interesting,\u201d said Scannell (pictured above, right). \u201cObviously, some of the similarities became obvious with set building vs. model making, and the reach for perfection shows preparation is key. The organization of the productions is very precise and to a point, it helps build time management and repetition skills, which are constantly used in architecture. The artistic design and creativity side has definitely helped me branch out from ideas in architecture and try to bring more physical life to my projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burch also enlisted the help of junior theatre major Adrian Ewens as costume designer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"sketches of costumes and characters for the Caligari Project\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/05\/Caligari-costume-1.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1800\/1200;\"><\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe puppets are stylized and don&#8217;t have human proportions, but they also don&#8217;t really have doll proportions either,\u201d Ewens said. \u201cIt means that we can&#8217;t really buy any of the clothes; they all have to be made from scratch. So I get a lot more freedom in what I want to do, but it takes more time and effort to get everything done (and I&#8217;m so thankful for the costume shop workers who&#8217;ve really made all of it come to life!)
