A community driven companion exhibition to Elder Gallery\u2019s <em>Disrupting the Matrix<\/em>, the alumni show explores topics of mental health, emotions, self-examination, lived experience, and existentialism.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Morgan Tran, managing director at Elder Gallery, initiated the idea of having a UNC Charlotte alumni printmaking show in conjunction with<a href=\"https:\/\/eldergalleryclt.com\/disrupting-the-matrix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <em>Disrupting the Matrix<\/em><\/a>. The gallery\u2019s first exhibition exclusively dedicated to the practice of printmaking, Disrupting the Matrix features works by 15 artists, including UNC Charlotte faculty Erik Waterkotte and Anna Kenar. Impressions utilizes Elder\u2019s \u201cpocket gallery,\u201d a space for upcoming local artists, collaborations, and experimental exhibitions. Photo by Morgan Tran.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It was Thrower\u2019s first opportunity to curate an exhibition.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI had full hands on every step: artist selection, communicating with the artist, consignment agreements, installation, etc.,\u201d she said. \u201cJennifer Minnis and I brainstormed a list of recent UNC Charlotte graduates who were printmaking majors as well as alumni in the art department who took interest in printmaking despite it not being their concentration. We also selected work based on the printmaking process, as we wanted to share as many printmaking processes as possible in the exhibition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Thrower-print.jpg\" alt=\"lithrograph by Nikki Thrower\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 500px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 500\/750;\" \/>Impressions<\/em> includes works by Thrower and four additional alumni: Callie Brewer \u201821, Laura Lucas \u201823, Asia Hanon \u201823, and Tiara Tiana \u201823.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Brewer submitted four works \u2013 two intaglio prints, &#8220;Umphidone&#8221; and &#8220;Drained&#8221;, and two silkscreen prints mounted on a mirror titled &#8220;What Do You Mean I Look Tired?&#8221; and &#8220;I&#8217;d Give You Everything.&#8221; Lucas has two collagraphs, &#8220;Dark Age&#8221; and &#8220;Dark Age (Square).&#8221; Hanon\u2019s print, &#8220;As I Am,&#8221; is a linocut on paper. Tiana created a collage made from collagraphs, entitled &#8220;Pandora&#8217;s Box.&#8221; Thrower\u2019s piece in the show is &#8220;Amor Fati,&#8221; a large scale woodcut print on Kitikata paper (pictured right).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe hope for the audience is that the people who experience <em>Disrupting the Matrix<\/em> and <em>Impressions<\/em> find a love for printmaking and its versatility,\u201d Thrower said. \u201cThere is no right or wrong way to do printmaking; it is a medium that is meant to be experimented with and challenged. <em>Disrupting the Matrix<\/em> does a beautiful job of showcasing the different processes and results of printmaking.
