{"id":40009,"date":"2024-03-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-28T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/professors-research-reconstructs-ephemeral-stages-of-18th-century-french-diplomacy\/"},"modified":"2025-04-07T09:23:24","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T13:23:24","slug":"professors-research-reconstructs-ephemeral-stages-of-18th-century-french-diplomacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/news\/2024-03-28\/professors-research-reconstructs-ephemeral-stages-18th-century-french-diplomacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor\u2019s Research Reconstructs Ephemeral Stages of 18th-century French Diplomacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p>The <em>Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians<\/em> (JSAH), the leading English-language journal on the history of the built environment, has published an article by <a href=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/people\/matthew-gin\">Assistant Professor of Architectural History Matthew Gin<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1525\/jsah.2024.83.1.29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cStaging Sovereignty: Ephemeral Architecture and the Entry of Maria Teresa Rafaela into France, 1745\u201d<\/a> appears in Volume 83, Issue 1, the March 2024 issue of JSAH.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStaging Sovereignty\u201d is Gin\u2019s most recent publication in his ongoing research on the ephemeral architecture built in France for royal festivals and diplomatic ceremonies. This particular article reconstructs the <em>remise<\/em> of Maria Teresa Rafaela, a ritual held in 1745 that marked when the Spanish princess left her homeland and became the bride of Prince Louis-Ferdinand of France, the son of King Louis XV. The two-and-a-half-hour ceremony took place on the Isle of Pheasants, a tiny island in the midst of the Bidasoa River along the Spanish-French border. Gin highlights how temporary structures, like bridges and an elaborate pavilion, played an important role in the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt became an amazing demonstration of the architectural underpinnings of diplomacy,\u201d said Gin. \u201cA space where political power was unfolding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"an 18th-century illustration of the remise of maria Teresa Rafaela\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Gin_remise-plan.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1800\/1136;\"><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Attributed to Jue, Plan of the Isle de la Conf\u00e9rence on which was built the structure for the passage of Madame la Dauphine on January 13, 1745, 1745. (Biblioth\u00e8que nationale de France).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStaging Sovereignty,\u201d which in an earlier version won a 2021 Society for Court Studies Essay Prize, is part of a larger body of research that formed Gin\u2019s dissertation and will become his first book, <em>Paper Monuments: The Politics of Ephemeral Festival Architecture in Enlightenment France<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Gin first became interested in 18<sup>th<\/sup>-century France as an undergraduate student majoring in art history and Baroque flute at Oberlin College, where he was \u201ccompletely enamored with French music and culture\u201d and fascinated by \u201cthe relationship between performance and space,\u201d he said. But his expertise in ephemeral architecture is actually the result of a numerical error.<\/p>\n<p>As a graduate student at Harvard University, Gin went to the rare books library to request a book about French Baroque hedge mazes, but accidentally entered the wrong call number. When the librarian rolled out a cart with a gigantic book about a royal wedding in Paris, he felt obliged to look at it. Opening the massive cover, he discovered \u201can incredible series of images\u201d of the temporary architecture built for the festivities, he said. \u201cMy mind was exploding in that moment, seeing all of that material. I was hooked.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Years of research in state diplomatic archives in France have followed, and this summer Gin will spend this summer in Paris working on the manuscript.<\/p>\n<p>While Gin\u2019s focus is on the 1700s, French ephemeral architecture is not just a thing of the past, he said.
