If you would like to understand the spaces in which you spend nearly all of your waking and sleeping hours, how they affect you and how they came to be the way they are, read <em>Inside OUT<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Rob Dunn, biologist, author of <em>A Natural History of the Future<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>McCormick says that while she has long been interested in the connections between buildings and human health, she began to focus intently on the enclosed environment of fully conditioned buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic, \u201cwhen buildings became the enemy of respiratory health.\u201d And even though the sudden awareness of air-borne viruses led people to open more windows and spend more time outdoors, most people in the United States still spend 90% of their time inside, where contamination \u2013 from people and from products like building materials, furniture, or cleaning chemicals \u2013 gets trapped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndoor air is not regulated in the U.S.,\u201d McCormick said. \u201cIt\u2019s not even tracked.\u201d Except in unusual cases such as wildfires or high ozone days, she added, \u201coutdoor air is cleaner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCormick grew up in steamy Houston, Texas, and knows the positive value of air conditioning, but she also has witnessed its negative implications \u2013 on architectural design, environmental sustainability, and human health and behavior.<\/p>\n<p>For example, fully conditioned buildings have contributed to a homogeneity of design that reduces the distinctiveness of regional architecture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lose some of the spirit of the cities,\u201d McCormick said.<\/p>\n<p>And spending so much time in tightly controlled temperatures has affected our perceptions of what is comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs people get more and more used to air conditioning, what we can tolerate has narrowed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The burden on the electrical grid \u2013 and thus the health of the environment \u2013 has been well documented. Then there are the effects on human health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are more cases of allergies and asthma in developed countries than in less developed countries,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2024\/06\/Figure-2.3.png\" alt=\"image of old newspaper ad for air conditioning\" width=\"448\" height=\"620\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 448px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 448\/620;\" \/>In the book, McCormick and her contributors, <a href=\"https:\/\/civmin.utoronto.ca\/home\/about-us\/directory\/professors\/sarah-haines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/civmin.utoronto.ca\/home\/about-us\/directory\/professors\/sarah-haines\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1716035392190000&amp;usg=AOvVaw15T02lr6DBA22aePETQStF\">Sarah Haines<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/branchpattern.com\/person\/marcel-harmon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/branchpattern.com\/person\/marcel-harmon\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1716035392190000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1ihh5xqc4FZtU2mCd2aSGy\">Marcel Harmon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskewdumezripple.com\/z-smith.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.eskewdumezripple.com\/z-smith.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1716035392190000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0uZ45qPyIcnfLe1ogUuUvw\">Z Smith<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tyler.temple.edu\/faculty\/ulysses-sean-vance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/tyler.temple.edu\/faculty\/ulysses-sean-vance&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1716035392190000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1xLmcphFJacxF-hCNuyN5Q\">Ulysses Sean Vance<\/a>, consider both the past and the present to understand how practices and perceptions have been shaped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of archival imagery in the book used to convey how our views of the indoors are deeply rooted in historical social constructs of comfort, health, and hygiene,\u201d McCormick said.<\/p>\n<p>As she completes a doctorate in design, with graduation expected in December, McCormick is tracking indoor air quality in four buildings in the southeast, the results of which will be presented in her dissertation, <a href=\"https:\/\/blurrededgesresearch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Blurred Edges<\/em><\/a>. With that research and <em>Inside OUT<\/em>, she hopes she\u2019s \u201cshifting the mind-set and reframing questions&#8221; in an effort to understand decisions regarding the wide-spread implementation of air conditioning and the implications of those decisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t even question the harsh divide between inside and out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>In March 2022, the School of Architecture and AIA Charlotte presented a symposium, Inside | Out, in which McCormick led a panel discussion with Sarah Haines, Marcel Harmon, Z Smith and Ulysses Sean Vance.
