Alumnus Rob Linton has recently returned to his alma mater, joining the adjunct faculty in the Department of Music in Fall 2021. When he’s not teaching – he also runs a private studio and teaches at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs – Rob plays professionally four or five times a week, particuarly in the Knoxville, Tennessee, area, where he’s a regular at venues like the Pilot Light, Scruffy City Hall, and Bistro by the Bijou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did your education at UNC Charlotte prepare you? What are some of the key things you learned?<\/strong>
UNC Charlotte\u2019s jazz and orchestra program provided me with the individualized attention that I needed to grow. I am so thankful for all of the different playing situations I was able to be part of, the music I was exposed to, and the lessons I learned. I think that prepared me for my next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you have any particularly special memories of your educational experiences?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNC Charlotte\u2019s faculty provides so many masterclass opportunities for guest artists to teach students. A special memory I have is when I was able to play trio with Jerry Weldon in a masterclass. Jerry is a great NYC-based saxophonist who performs in Harry Connick, Jr\u2019s band. I learned a lot from that masterclass and still use (and still continue to improve) on the advice he gave me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice do you have for current music students?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The advice I have for current music students is to be open to all music. You never know where your path will take you. I have played all kinds of music after graduating and finishing my degrees. I would also say it is important to practice often, but don\u2019t forget to live life and let that also influence your music.
