{"id":62771,"date":"2024-12-04T11:10:28","date_gmt":"2024-12-04T16:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/?p=62771"},"modified":"2024-12-06T15:26:16","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T20:26:16","slug":"connections-across-cultures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/2024\/12\/04\/connections-across-cultures\/","title":{"rendered":"Connections Across Cultures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Amir Heydarpour completed his undergraduate architecture degree in his native Iran, he looked abroad for graduate programs, considering universities in Germany and the United States. Accepted to schools such as Virginia Tech, Rhode Island School of Design, and Savannah College of Art &amp; Design, he chose UNC Charlotte in large part because of the Graduate Assistant Support Program (GASP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a really good scholarship,\u201d he says. &nbsp;\u201cI talked to a couple of students here and looked at the faculty and found the people I would like to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amir entered the Master of Architecture program in January of 2023 and will graduate on December 13. As an international student, the first semester was challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a culture shock, trying to be yourself in a different language,\u201d he says. \u201cSometimes you feel like you\u2019re walking in a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although he had studied English from childhood \u2013 and speaks it well \u2013 he found it nerve wracking in studio to talk about his projects. \u201cI was shaking!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amir says that the beauty of the campus and the quality of the faculty have made his time at UNC Charlotte a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRachel Dickey, she\u2019s amazing! She made me really interested in computation, in using computation to create art \u2013 something I wouldn\u2019t have imagined doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last spring, Amir took Dickey\u2019s \u201cSound, Body, and Space\u201d class, co-taught with clarinet professor Jessica Lindsey. He has continued to work with Dickey through an independent study this fall, for which he developed a live-feed video project that connected the Storrs architecture building with Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. During the recent installation, music students playing instruments in a practice room were simultaneously projected onto a wall in the Storrs lobby. There are these barriers we have on campus. I wanted to create this interaction between two spaces. It\u2019s really effective to see other arts majors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor of Architecture Chris Jarrett, former director of the School of Architecture, was another inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe gave us a book, and we had to choose a chapter and design based on that chapter.
