{"id":65369,"date":"2025-04-07T16:20:49","date_gmt":"2025-04-07T20:20:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/?p=65369"},"modified":"2025-04-07T16:29:24","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T20:29:24","slug":"interdisciplinary-seminar-considers-the-relationship-between-sound-space-and-the-body","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/2025\/04\/07\/interdisciplinary-seminar-considers-the-relationship-between-sound-space-and-the-body\/","title":{"rendered":"Interdisciplinary Seminar Considers the Relationship Between Sound, Space and the Body"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Associate Professor of Architecture <a href=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/people\/rachel-dickey\/\">Rachel Dickey<\/a> and Associate Professor of Music <a href=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/people\/jessica-lindsey\/\">Jessica Lindsey<\/a> have joined their research interests to co-teach the elective seminar \u201cSound, Body, and Space.\u201d First taught in 2023 and offered again this semester, the course is open to all College of Arts + Architecture students and explores how experience-oriented design and performance are both enlivened, materialized, and situated in the world through the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two professors recently presented a paper describing their course at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acsa-arch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture 113<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Meeting<\/a>, held March 2-22 in New Orleans. During one class session, for example, they recreated Bernard Leitner\u2019s exploration of spatial audio, using sound to define space by placing channeled speakers around an individual, who lies flat on the floor. (Pictured right.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, throughout the semester students visit a range of places on campus and off, \u201csensing the tactility of sound\u201d in different spaces. &nbsp;Among their destinations this spring were city sites like Goodyear Arts at Camp North End, a former industrial complex, and First United Methodist Church, an uptown gothic revival sanctuary built in 1928.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy observing, documenting, and responding to a range of experiences and spaces, the class provides a discursive tool for experience-generated art and design,\u201d the professors wrote in their conference paper. \u201cIt offers moments for gaining conscious awareness to develop experience-related sensibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dickey\u2019s research is characterized by the synthesis of architecture, art, cognitive science, and technology to achieve a multifaceted study of the human experience and the built environment. Among her acoustic investigations is the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/studiodickey.com\/sound-pavilion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sound Pavilion<\/a>\u201d (2020) installation, a gypsum architectural \u201cinstrument\u201d that generated a unique auditory experience based on guests\u2019 presence in and around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lindsey is a clarinetist, a new music champion, and a member of the Spatial Forces Duo, a clarinet\/bass clarinet that performs electroacoustic music.
