Locally, his work can be seen regularly at Children\u2019s Theatre of Charlotte, Charlotte Conservatory Theatre, and of course in Robinson Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to creating stunning stage sets for dramatic productions, Burch plays with puppets. He recently began developing his newest creations at Goodyear Arts, a local nonprofit arts space at Camp North End where Burch was one of three Summer 2025 Artists in Residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The residency began on May 18 and ended on June 27 with a workshop performance of <em>On a Bench, By the Sea<\/em>, Burch\u2019s adaptation of children\u2019s books by Wendy Meddour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBasically, I\u2019ve used the residency to adapt the script, research, design, sketch, carve, and build the puppets,\u201d Burch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burch began with the story \u201cLubna and Pebble,\u201d which Rebecca Worthington at Children\u2019s Theatre of Charlotte (CTC) had suggested to him after his successful puppet adaptation of Peter Reynolds\u2019s book, \u201cThe Dot.\u201d In the story, a little girl in a refugee camp finds comfort in a pebble, which becomes her \u201cfriend\u201d and which she ultimately gives to another refugee boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a really lovely little story,\u201d Burch said. \u201cIt has a lot of comedy to it, but it has a lot of heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burch received permission from Meddour to adapt \u201cLubna and Pebble\u201d and two other books, \u201cThe Friendship Bench\u201d and \u201cGrandpa\u2019s Top Threes.\u201d All three stories have a bench, and they share a common theme, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey all have this beautiful question of kindness and empathy and helping out someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;The Goodyear Arts residency, Burch said, enabled him to begin working through the project and \u201cget it up on its puppet feet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"565\" height=\"427\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2025\/07\/Burch_Bench-by-Sea.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67581 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 565px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 565\/427;width:590px;height:auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2025\/07\/Burch_Bench-by-Sea.jpg 565w, https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2025\/07\/Burch_Bench-by-Sea-300x227.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2025\/07\/Burch_puppets-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67583 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 640px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 640\/480;width:593px;height:auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2025\/07\/Burch_puppets-rotated.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2025\/07\/Burch_puppets-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/807\/2025\/07\/Burch_puppets-300x225.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three puppets debuted in the June 27 performance at Goodyear, operated by members of the Goodyear Arts Collective and recent theatre alumna Irene Nash, who graduated in December. Nash (pictured above, left) was a member of the puppetry team in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/news\/2023-11-01\/silent-horror-film-gets-puppet-remake\/\">Department of Theatre\u2019s Fall 2023 production of <em>The Caligari Project<\/em><\/a>, Burch\u2019s adaptation of the classic expressionist film, <em>The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While <em>On a Bench, By the Sea<\/em> is still in development, Burch is also at work designing and building puppets for another CTC production \u2013 <em>Tiny and Large: Big Friends<\/em>, written and directed by Melissa Roberge.
