New Charlotte museum exhibit expands inclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Charlotte Observer<\/em> &#8211; A new installation at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in uptown Charlotte is a collaboration with Charlotte resident and UNC Charlotte grad Davian \u201cDJ\u201d Robinson &#8217;20, a visually impaired dancer and choreographer. It invites visitors to experience art not just with their eyes, but with their full bodies through sound, movement and presence. It\u2019s called \u201cCollection, Reframed: We Are Here, Beyond Vision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibition opened in early July and runs through Sept. 22. It uses immersive video, spatial audio and something called \u201cdata sonification\u201d to transform how we engage with visual art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople always say visual art isn\u2019t for blind folks,\u201d Robinson told the Charlotte Observer. \u201cBut if you just expand the medium, anyone can experience it. Accessibility is about imagination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the show\u2019s innovative elements is its use of \u201cdata sonification,\u201d or the process of translating data into sound. That required taking hundreds of high-resolution photos of three artworks from the Bechtler\u2019s permanent collection: a painting by UNC Charlotte art professor Maja Godlewska titled \u201cWhite\u201d (2004), a bronze by Barbara Hepworth called \u201cGarden Sculpture (Model for Meridian)\u201c (1958) and a tapestry by Pablo Picasso, \u201cThe Acrobat\u201d (1968). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople think access means doing the bare minimum,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cBut when you lead with access, you unlock a whole new realm of artistic possibility.
