{"id":69633,"date":"2025-09-17T13:39:54","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T17:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/?p=69633"},"modified":"2025-09-17T13:39:55","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T17:39:55","slug":"asheville-based-artist-highlights-pesticide-companies-greenwashing-in-new-charlotte-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cws.charlotte.edu\/backup-coaa\/2025\/09\/17\/asheville-based-artist-highlights-pesticide-companies-greenwashing-in-new-charlotte-installation\/","title":{"rendered":"Asheville-based artist highlights pesticide companies\u2019 greenwashing in new Charlotte installation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>WFAE environmental reporter Zachary Turner explores the exhibition of work by artist Kirsten Stolle on view in the Projective Eye Gallery.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new art exhibit in uptown Charlotte explores how companies use rhetorical sleight of hand to escape public scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asheville-based artist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirstenstolle.com\/exhibitions\/under-the-influence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kirsten Stolle\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;latest works explore the concept of greenwashing, which she described as \u201cputting an environmental sheen on something that is either blatantly not environmental, or at best, minimally environmental.\u201d Her installation, \u201cUnder the Influence,\u201d looks at the history of agrochemical companies Monsanto and Bayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNC Charlotte\u2019s Dubois Center is hosting the installation. Digital prints, a woven tapestry and other mixed-media artworks adorn the walls of the center\u2019s Projective Eye Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \u201cLast Supper,\u201d she created a tapestry by repeating an image from a 1952 Monsanto retirement dinner. She said she applies a research-driven approach to her pieces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI went back to look at what the gladiolas, what color the gladiolas would have been in 1952 in St. Louis, which is where [Monsanto is] based,\u201d Stolle said. She did the same for the men\u2019s suits and ties. \u201cI worked with a graphic designer to manipulate [the image] in Photoshop and create this tapestry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of her process involves recontextualizing propaganda to highlight the absurdity of corporate branding. In the center of the room, a display case mimics a museum exhibit, showcasing Monsanto-branded matches, watches and even a 1953 vinyl for the song \u201cMonsanto March\u201d by the Don Juan Quartet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of her work links the history of pesticide litigation to the modern day. In a series called \u201cNew Ways to Stop Weeds,\u201d green and orange neon lights frame collages of old pesticide advertisements. In one piece, the word \u201cparaquat\u201d repeats on a white background, intersecting with black-and-white images of a grape field to form a cross. The name \u201cSyngenta\u201d interrupts the pattern about two-thirds of the way down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe company Chevron was promoting this really deadly pesticide called paraquat in the grape fields,\u201d Stolle said. \u201cSyngenta recently bought it, and there have been lawsuits against paraquat for causing Parkinson&#8217;s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfae.org\/energy-environment\/2025-09-17\/asheville-based-artist-highlights-pesticide-companies-greenwashing-in-new-charlotte-installation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read and hear the full story here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WFAE environmental reporter Zachary Turner explores the exhibition of work by artist Kirsten Stolle on view in the Projective Eye Gallery.
