Albany Records has released a new album by the Burnt Reeds ensemble, a quintet of woodwind musicians that includes Associate Professor of Clarinet Jessica Lindsey<\/a>. The first album by Burnt Reeds, which began performing in 2020, \u201cHomegrown Melodies<\/a>\u201d is a collection of new works by six composers from the Carolinas, commissioned by the quintet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe started to work on this specific project in 2023, dreaming big with an application for an Opportunity Grant from the City of Charlotte,\u201d said Lindsey, who has also composed a piece for the album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their successful application resulted in a $28,600 Opportunity Fund grant<\/a>, which supported the commissioning, rehearsing and premiere of the new compositions at a public performance in February 2024. A subsequent Culture Blocks grant from the Arts & Science Council funded a series of 11 free community performances in August 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To support the costs of recording, editing and mastering the album \u2013 all engineered by Senior Lecturer of Music Rick Dior at his Acoustic Barn Productions \u2013 Lindsey received an Artist Support Grant from the ASC and a 2025 Faculty Research Grant from the university. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The music of \u201cHomegrown Melodies,\u201d by composers Madison Bush, Amber Ferenz, Teil Taliesen, Dylan Taliesen, Zach Zubow and Lindsey, evokes experiences of North Carolina, from the personal to the geographic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A South Carolinian who comes frequently to Charlotte, Bush\u2019s \u201cThe Drive There and Back\u201d suggests \u201cthe interconnection of North and South Carolinian relationships and communities across formal borders,\u201d ken tianyuan Ge writes in the liner notes<\/a>. Ferenz, who lives in Winston-Salem, encapsulates North Carolina\u2019s \u201cnatural beauty and topographical diversity\u201d in \u201cFrom the Mountains to the Sea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teil Taliesen\u2019s \u201cThe Heroine\u2019s Journey\u201d is a \u201cgenre-bending collaboration\u201d with the producer RoyalCity LiF, who provides an \u201celectronic meshwork\u201d of \u201ctrap-inflected textures,\u201d Ge writes. Zubow\u2019s brewery-inspired \u201cOne For Me, One For You\u201d incorporates a Celtic flavor, while Dylan Taliesen\u2019s \u201cGrowing Up Klezmer\u201d includes both traditional tunes and original material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Lindsey\u2019s \u201cLand of the Sky,\u201d the musicians \u201cimitate and converse with pre-recorded samples of trains and birds,\u201d writes Ge. The blend of acoustic and electronic sound, found throughout this album, is an area of energetic exploration for Lindsey. In 2021 she and her \u201cSpatial Forces\u201d duo partner, Christy Banks, released the electroacoustic album \u201cLittle Spectacle,\u201d<\/a> featuring commissions by seven composers.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Lindsey, who plays bass clarinet on the album, Burnt Reeds includes Teil Taliesin on oboe, English horn and ocean drum; Dylan Taliesin on clarinet; Jack Murray on soprano and alto saxophones; and Stephanie Lipka on bassoon. Learn more about the quintet here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
